Simon Stephenson

Simon Stephenson How long have you been with Mott MacDonald?
Since February 2004

What did you do before starting at Mott MacDonald?
After completing my degree, I travelled through Asia, Australasia and Southern Africa.

What made you choose your career?
Tunnelling combines many engineering disciplines, which suited my broad engineering background. Also, I believe tunnels will become increasingly inportant in our crowded world, so tunnelling is a good industry to be in.

What's the best bit of your job?
I like the huge scale of the structural components when designing a tunnel system, the machines required to excavate large diameter tunnels are very impressive.

What's been your favourite project?
I worked on the conceptual design for the A3 Hindhead tunnel. It was a great opportunity to learn about all the components of a road tunnel, I got a chance to design some of them.

What are your professional interests?
I am interested in all aspects of transport infrastructure design.

What are your personal interests?
I enjoy travelling, music, movies and my VW campervan.

With very short notice, you are sent off to a remote, unpopulated desert island. You are allowed to take 6 items with you, 3 essential and 3 luxuries. What would you take?
